KEEP AHEAD OF EMERGING DRUG TRENDS

Why test for K2, Ketamine and Benzodiazepines in the Workplace?

While the Australian Standard for oral fluid testing, AS/NZS 4760:2019, does not currently include K2 (Synthetic Marijuana), Ketamine and Benzodiazepines, many organisations are choosing to incorporate these substances to enhance their broader detection scope and detect other commonly abused drugs within their workplaces.

All drugs can significantly impair alertness, coordination, and reaction time. In safety-sensitive workplaces, even therapeutic use can increase the risk of incidents, particularly where employees are operating vehicles, machinery, or performing high-risk tasks.

By incorporating K2, KET and BZO detection into your drug testing program, you strengthen your commitment to workplace health and safety while staying aligned with best-practice standards such as AS/NZS 4760:2019.

Product Benefits

All-in-One Design for Faster Results

The all-in-one system transfers saliva straight onto the test strips, removing the need for separate sample collection and making the process faster and more efficient. It delivers rapid, dependable outcomes that enable prompt decisions in environments where safety is essential.

Designed for Australian Drugs of Abuse - Plus Alcohol Detection

Expands upon the key substance groups in AS4760:2019, by incorporating Benzodiazepines (BZO), Ketamine (KET) and K2 for comprehensive workplace drug testing. Plus the addition of an alcohol test enables drug and alcohol testing all in one test device.

Minimal Saliva Volume

Featuring 8 drug panels across 3 test strips, plus an alcohol reactive pad, the device minimises the amount of saliva needed compared to standard saliva drug tests. The reduced sample requirement enables faster collection and rapid results, all while ensuring reliable and effective detection in professional settings.

Non-intrusive and Hygenic Collection

Oral swab sampling offers a more comfortable and less invasive alternative to urine-based drug screening. The soft-tip oral swab makes the experience pleasant for the donor. Because the process can be directly observed, it helps reduce the risk of contamination or tampering.

Drug test lines interpretation

Interpretation of Test Lines

The ‘presence’ of the Test line and Control line indicates a negative drug test result.

The ‘absence’ of the Test line and presence of only the Control line indicates a presumptive positive drug test result (non-negative).

If a Control line fails to appear the drug test result is invalid and the test will need to be repeated.

How to perform a Saliva/Oral Fluid Drug Test

Performing a saliva drug test is quick and straightforward:

Prepare the Drug Kit – Ensure the drug test kit is at room temperature and ready for use.

Collect the Saliva Sample – The donor swabs the inside of their mouth (cheeks, gums, and tongue) with the collection device for a specified time (approx. 3 minutes).

Activate the Drug Test – Replace the cap over the swab and place the test on a flat surface. The test will automatically begin processing the sample.

Wait for Drug Test Results – Within a few minutes, drug test results appear as lines on the test panel, indicating the presence or absence of each drug.

Interpret the Drug Test Results – Compare the drug test lines to the interpretation chart in the provided instructions. A control line must always appear for the test to be valid.

Alcohol Test: The alcohol test swab will turn a blue/green colour if the donor's alcohol level is 0.020% or greater. If it doesn't change colour there is no detectable alcohol.

Record and Dispose – Record the drug test results and properly dispose of the used drug test kit according to guidelines.

Laboratory confirmation may be required for non-negative results.

Onsite 6 Drug Saliva Test Options

All 3 tests include all drug groups required under AS/NZS4760:2019.

The Saliva Swipe 6 Advanced version is a all-in-one test which automatically transfers the saliva from the collector to the test strips, thus making testing quicker.

The Saliva Check 6 Advanced utilises the same type of test strips where there are multiple drugs on each strip - less saliva is required. It has a collection stick with saturation indicator. Once saturated insert into the test chamber and results appear.

The Oral 6 Advanced uses a collection stick but requires more saliva because each drug group is on a separate test strip. Interpretation may be easier for some with this version.

·  Study from anywhere in Australia with online learning and posted practical materials.

·  Learn from experienced workplace drug and alcohol testing professionals.

·  Flexible assessment options to suit individual students and workplaces.

Delivered by Onsite Diagnostics Pty Ltd (RTO 91700), this course equips participants with the practical skills required for urine and oral fluid specimen collection, conduct breath alcohol testing, and manage legally defensible workplace drug testing programs.

This training aligns with Australian Standards AS/NZS 4308:2023 and AS/NZS 4760:2019, ensuring specimen collection procedures meet workplace compliance and chain-of-custody requirements.

Collection Method:
Saliva Testing: Involves swabbing the mouth, which is non-invasive and can be conducted quickly under direct supervision.

Urine Testing: Requires the donor to provide a urine sample in a controlled environment, which may involve more complex collection protocols to ensure sample integrity.

Detection Window:
Saliva Testing: Generally detects recent drug use, typically within a few hours up to a day, making it useful for identifying current impairment.

Urine Testing: Can detect drug metabolites for several days after use, offering a broader window for identifying past substance use.

Risk of Adulteration:
Saliva Testing: The collection process is more easily supervised, reducing the risk of sample adulteration.

Urine Testing: Although often observed, urine samples can be more susceptible to tampering or adulteration if proper protocols are not followed.

Each method has its advantages depending on the specific requirements of the testing program, such as the need for rapid on-site results or a longer detection period.

Yes, it is highly recommended that your company has a clear and well-documented drug and alcohol policy before testing employees. Here’s why:

1. Legal Compliance

A policy ensures that drug and alcohol testing aligns with workplace laws, privacy regulations, and industry standards. In Australia, workplace drug testing must comply with Fair Work Act provisions and relevant work health and safety (WHS) laws.

2. Employee Awareness & Fairness

A formal policy informs employees about testing procedures, expectations, and consequences of positive results.

It prevents disputes by ensuring consistency and transparency in testing practices.

3. Protects Against Legal Challenges

Without a policy, employees may challenge test results, disciplinary actions, or termination decisions.

A well-structured policy helps defend the company against unfair dismissal claims.

4. Defines Testing Procedures

Specifies who, when, and how testing will be conducted (e.g., pre-employment, random, post-incident).

Outlines the types of tests used (saliva, urine) and the handling of results.

5. Supports a Safe & Productive Workplace

Reinforces a commitment to safety, reducing risks of accidents caused by impairment.

Encourages a culture of accountability and responsibility among employees.

You must designate an employee at your workplace to be trained as a 'Collector.' This individual must complete the Nationally Accredited Course HLTPAT010 – Collect Specimens for Drugs of Abuse Testing, which involves 5-6 hours of training through distance or online study. Onsite Diagnostics Pty Ltd (RTO#91700) is a Registered Training Organisation that offers this course and provides continual support after completion of the course.

Note: Australian Standards 4760:2019 & 4308:2023 state that the collector must have successfully completed a course of instruction in compliance with these Standards and received a Statement of Attainment in accordance with the Australian Quality Training Framework.

Drug tests should be stored properly to ensure their accuracy and longevity. Follow these guidelines:

  • Temperature: Store at room temperature (2°C – 30°C). Avoid extreme heat or cold.
  • Humidity: Keep in a dry environment, away from moisture or humidity.
  • Light Exposure: Store away from direct sunlight to prevent degradation.
  • Sealing: Keep test kits sealed in their original packaging until use to maintain integrity.
  • Expiration Check: Regularly check expiration dates and avoid using expired tests.
  • Secure Storage: Store in a secure location to prevent tampering or unauthorised access.

Yes, if you receive a non-negative drug test result in Australia, the specimen should be sent to a National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA)-accredited laboratory for confirmatory testing. This ensures accurate and legally defensible results through Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) or Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis.

Your workplace drug and alcohol policy should outline the correct procedure for handling non-negative results, including chain-of-custody protocols to maintain sample integrity. If you need assistance with laboratory referrals, please contact us on 1300 667 107.
